Overview

The Ice Maintenance Person is a pro-active and hands-on individual who performs general maintenance to ensure facility upkeep and regular flooding of ice rinks is completed in a timely and safe manner. Their primary responsibilities include ice resurfacing and edging (operating the Ice Resurfacer), janitorial work and general maintenance of facility.

Responsibilities

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Functional

  • Perform maintenance tasks in accordance with local building and fire codes
  • Maintain and monitor the ice refrigeration plant regularly and take appropriate actions as necessary for safe operation, maintaining logs with readings (as required) and keeping appropriate notes on the following:
    • Record ice plant operational readings
    • Maintain cleanliness and repaint as required
    • Perform minor refrigeration plant / HVAC maintenance as assigned by Manager
  • If holds a Refrigeration Operator Class "B" Certification (B Ticket) may also be responsible for Ice Maintenance tasks including

    • Ice Resurfacer operation, Edger operation, Ice depth measurement, Ice chopping/spudding, Levelling the Ice, Ice Painting, Dasher Board system repair, Arena Glass replacement, and Hockey net refurbishment
  • Execute maintenance and repair of facility fixtures and components
  • Janitorial duties as assigned. These may include janitorial checklists, vacuuming, auto scrubbing, waxing and buffing in line with established floor care procedures
  • Ensure that entrances, grounds, and parking lot are kept clean, clear and safe including:
    • Property & grounds cleanup
    • Grass cutting and edging
    • Seasonal snow and debris removal
  • Perform minor maintenance on facility and ice maintenance equipment including:
    • Ice Resurfacer safety check, clean and wax
    • Safe blade changes and grease machine as needed
  • Maintain appropriate checklists, records and reports including Ice Resurfacer sign out / safety check

 

Health and Safety

  • Adhere to all Risk Management policies and procedures
  • Ensure a safe working environment and a safe customer environment for the facility as detailed in the Risk Management checklist and by adhering to and maintaining:
    • Safe work practices such as those relating to lifting and carrying
    • Elimination of Slip, Trip and Fall hazards
    • Appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Report any unsafe Health & Safety conditions
  • Is trained/certified in:
    • "WHMIS" and "Workplace Violence"
    • Use of equipment and supplies as required including Elevated Work Platform and Propane Handling consistent with manufacturer guidelines and best practice
  • Ensure the proper use and safe storage of hazardous materials, tools, equipment and machinery
  • Is aware and understands implementation of the Facility Emergency Plan, Incident Reports and knows the location and how to use the First Aid Kit, Eye Wash Station and Defibrillator

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

  • Completed high school education or equivalent (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license (preferred)
  • Refrigeration Operator Certification - Refrigerator Operator Certificate / Refrigeration Operator Class "B" Certification (B Ticket) as required by local legislation (an asset)

ABILITIES, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience, training and operation of ice resurfacing equipment
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends)
  • Approachable and team orientated with great communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude (preferred)
  • Trade or Janitorial experience is an advantage
  • Organised, self-motivated and proactive
